Over a period of a few months, I had met dozens of policy professionals, both in Paris and Brussels, who were clearly in need of reliable, expert, streamlined information. A daily briefing by email seemed like a good way to hook them into an addictive morning ritual.
I saw a way to start small, with one or two editorial sections, then adding more as we became profitable. In that way, we wouldn't have to raise funds and could remain independent. But which market to start with? The EU, which is a bigger market, or France, where I knew of a great team of journalists to begin with?
I chose France – for the team.
Over the following 10 years, we zeroed in on building the best information product we could think of in order to help policy professionals anticipate regulations that would have an impact in France. We expanded to eight verticals and grew our newsroom to 35 journalists in Paris and 17 in Brussels, constantly refining our way of covering the intricacies of policymaking. We built a hybrid media, blending journalism and innovative tech tools to monitor policymaking in real time, and grew our tech and product team to 16. We are incredibly proud of being trusted by 14,000 users in 1,600 organisations, from Greenpeace and TotalEnergies to La France Insoumise and the Rassemblement National.
By this point, I felt that we were enough of an indisputable source in France to start investing elsewhere. The EU policy media landscape had evolved from being solely legacy in nature to a thriving landscape in which there was competition for talent, attention and scoops – great news for our democracy. Still, the need for clear, reliable, in-depth information was more relevant than ever.
So we decided to launch our first non-French product, aptly codenamed “EU”.
The following 20 months involved intense work. We invented new roles within the newsroom. We recruited news, sales, marketing, tech and HR teams. We rebuilt our content managing system from scratch, allowing it to support new multi-product processes. Our Editorial Director, Clémentine Forissier, will share more about this exciting transformation soon.
With Energy, we're doubling down on the core principles that define us. Our model isn't changing – it's expanding:
We aim to bring transparency to all professionals, not just those who have big bucks. We price our subscriptions according to an organisation’s type and size; we’ve found that these are the best indicators of its budget. Our subscriptions typically include an unlimited number of individual subscribers within a department or entire organisation, so you don’t have to worry about choosing the lucky few who get access.
A team of six passionate individuals will meticulously craft this new product, every day, to address the specific needs of professionals in the European energy landscape. We are so proud of this international team.
It’s such a joy to finally be broadening the scope of our offering – it’s something we’ve been working towards for 12 years.
We are on a mission to provide the most useful information service to policy professionals across Europe. Energy is just the beginning. You can look forward to the launch of another new editorial section before the year is out, along with exciting new features and tech tools that will allow for in-depth, customised, real-time monitoring.
